Sound design

Flo Oswald and Nico Krappweis answer.

What is sound design exactly?

What would Bernd be without „Booeee“ ? Would Chili‘s experiments be as mighty as they were without the „Krawoomm“ ? Why do Briegel‘s flowers always „Frrr“ whenever they come out?

All these sounds as well as a lot of other sounds find their way to the film in the studio, made by Nico and Flo. When they get the final edited Chili TV episodes you can only hear the puppets and the actors. This can turn boring after a while as you can imagine. So Nico and Flo take the „booeee“, the „Krawoomm“ and the „Frr“ put it onto the right spot in the film. Just not only these three sounds - in some episodes there exist about one thousand sounds, from broken glass or tire squeal to croaking frogs or creaking doors.

But somehow there is always still something missing. Correct. Music. „Rock the Bread“ would hardly be „Rock the Bread“ without any good rocking music! So they sort out the fitting music for their episodes, one time an exciting one, the next time a funny one, then again a sad one and whenever they don‘t find a CD that‘s good enough these boys makes the fitting music on their own. It‘s fun and after all it fits better to Chili. Briegel and Bernd anyway because it was made just for them.

How did you get this occupation?

Nico couldn‘t avoid it. He was a computer expert as well as musical and Tommy wanted to make movies. So what‘s better than tying his little brother up to a computer and letting him add the sound to the finished movies...
And Flo couldn‘t avoid Nico. As soon as they got known to each other he was decoyed to the bumm film by Nico and he never was allowed to leave. But it doesn‘t matter to him because he feels so comfortable there that he has liked to add sound with Nico onto the works of Tommy ( of course as well as Erik‘s and Nauer‘s and David‘s) since then.

Only once and a while Flo who was educated to be a carpenter and Nico who also was educated to be a carpenter even earlier sit down in front of the camp fire and dream of wood and what can be made out of it...

Do you compose your own music for the episodes or do you use edited music from others?

It depends on the situation. Of course we prefer to make our own music. However it takes a lot of time until a song is made to be usable. This includes composing, recording all musical instruments each and finally mixing them for a beautiful sound. Unfortunately there isn‘t always that much time, after all we want to provide our audience hungry for Bernd with new episodes every Saturday. That‘s why we use fitting music from our CD collection sometimes.

Where do you get the sounds when something‘s exploding for example?

We have a kind of big „storage“ on our computer for our sounds, there we have the „booee!“ as well as the „frrr“. Of course the explosion as well and lots of other sound effects. Whenever we have to add sound onto something that still misses a sound effect then either we record it ourselves or we attempt to change already excisting sounds until they sound like they suppoused to do. Since we do every single thing with the computer it isn‘t that difficult.

How long does it take to make your own music?

It can‘t be answered this generally, it depends on several factors. A longer episodes requires more music, so it would take longer to make this music. This costs much time and sometimes we realise that we better should have used another song so we step back. So it‘s hard to tell how long we work for such an episode. At the end it takes just some time so Bernd can appear punctually Saturday noon on KIKA.
